In India, there are more than 14,000 vocational training institutes, with over 2,000 Government-run Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and around 12,000 privately-managed Industrial Training Centers (ITCs). These skill training centers were established to provide vocational training to individuals interested in acquiring technical knowledge as an alternative to traditional school studies.
Pursuant to the Craftsman Scheme of the 1950s, these training institutes were established by the Directorate General of Employment & Training (DGET) of the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Government of India.
ITIs and ITCs offer trade courses in accordance with the guidelines set by the National Council for Vocational Training (NCVT). The State Council for Vocational Training (SCVT) is responsible for the implementation of policies within different Indian states.
Given the shortage of skilled manpower in various industries in India, ITIs and ITCs provide skill-based training to address this gap. Through vocational training, students acquire expertise in their chosen trades, enabling them to work in specific industries and earn a livelihood while contributing to the country’s economic and social progress.
Aspiring students can choose from a wide range of trade programs based on their interests and enroll in suitable courses. Eligibility criteria vary among programs, necessitating applicants to verify their qualifications before applying. In some states, clearing an entrance examination is required for admission.
The vocational trade programs typically consist of four semesters - 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. Students can access their results on the official website of NCVT or download the 'ncvtitiresult app' for result updates and additional information on skill training programs across various Indian states.
